A solar system for generating electricity - how does it work?
A solar system for generating electricity
Once the system is installed and switched on, the first rays of light at sunrise start it up and it begins generating electricity. The electricity passes through the inverter and from there straight to the distribution board. When you use electricity at home, you are in fact using electricity produced by the sun – by your own solar system. The system usually produces more electricity than the house consumes, and you sell the surplus directly to the Israel Electric Corporation at 48 agorot per kWh. After sunset the electricity you use at home comes straight from the electric company, and the bill is offset against the surplus your rooftop system produced. The next morning, at sunrise, the sun goes back to work.
The advantages of installing a solar system at home
There are several advantages to building a solar system to generate electricity for your home:
- A significant saving on electricity costs – thousands of shekels a year. For example, a solar system on a 100 sqm roof can produce around 15 kWh and bring in an annual return of more than ILS 11,000.
- A fast payback – sometimes in under seven years. At Rotem Energy we work out a precise calculation for your specific roof, taking into account the shape of the roof, how many panels can be installed, shading, the size of the roof and many other parameters, so that you end up with the best possible return.
- Using green energy – the sun is a renewable source that never runs out. This resource can and should be put to use: energy independence and a contribution to the environment, for a better future for us and above all for our children.
- A more valuable property – beyond the return and the financial case, a property with a solar system is a more attractive property. It is much like selling a property with an income-producing rental unit, only better, because there is no dealing with tenants: you have one permanent employee on the roof, the sun.
- Passive income – selling surplus electricity to the grid gives you a passive income.

Please note – the state and the electric company give an exclusive benefit to anyone installing a residential solar system in urban localities with a population of between 50,000 and 500,000. Eligible localities receive a preferential tariff of 54 agorot per kWh (instead of 48 agorot) – an extra 12.5% for every kWh of surplus your home system produces!

What is a residential solar system?
It is a system made up of solar panels, usually installed on the roof of the house, an inverter that converts solar energy into electricity you can use at home, and a monitoring and control system. The whole system is connected to the electric company’s grid, so as long as it is generating you are using power from the sun, and when there is a surplus it is fed into the grid and you are credited for it.
Who is a residential solar system suitable for?
A residential solar system suits owners of private homes with a roof exposed to the sun of at least around 70 sqm. The larger the roof, the more panels can be installed and the more electricity can be produced, which means bigger savings and sometimes an income from feeding the surplus into the grid.
The system is ideal for families with medium to high electricity consumption, for houses with tiled, concrete or flat roofs, and it is particularly worthwhile in areas with direct sunlight for most of the day.
In most cases a standard electrical connection and basic infrastructure approval are also required – Rotem Energy carries out all of those checks as part of the process.
What is the electricity reform and how does it affect a residential solar system?
The electricity reform is intended to encourage the installation of residential solar systems in Israel and to make generating power from the sun more accessible, more worthwhile and more profitable for the general public. Under the reform the state offers private homeowners two main options:
- Net metering – under this option the electricity you consume from the electric company is offset against the amount your residential solar system produces and feeds into the grid. The offset is calculated annually, so if you produced more than you consumed you are paid for the difference at a rate set in advance.
This is a common option for homes with high electricity consumption that want to cut their bill significantly. - Index-linked guaranteed tariff – under this option every kWh you feed into the electric company’s grid is priced at a fixed rate set in advance, linked to the consumer price index. The tariff stays fixed (and linked) for 25 years.
On top of that, in most cases there is also a government bonus of 6 agorot per kWh, and sometimes an urban premium as well (for property owners in urban areas).
